FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for x86 compatible (including PentiumВ and Athlonв ), amd64 compatible (including Opteronв , Athlon 64, and EM64T), Alpha/AXP, IA-64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC architectures.FreeBSD’s code base has undergone over thirty years of continuous development, improvement, and optimization. It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIXВ developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. Additional platforms are in various stages of development.

7 September: The fourth and last of the BETA builds for the FreeBSD-8.0 release cycle is now available. ISO images for Tier-1 architectures and a memory stick image for amd64/i386 are now available on most of the FreeBSD mirror sites.
